My name is Onwujiobi Chidimma Harmony, the newest First class graduate of accounting, university of Calabar, the 3rd first class graduate of the department since it’s existence and the first ever female First class graduate of the department of accounting, university of Calabar.
6th October, 2022 is a date that is now dear to me. A date I officially received my certificate after 6yrs of struggling in the academic city of Calabar for a course that was originally planned for 4yrs.
My academic journey was not an easy one at all, but receiving my well deserved certificate has wiped away all the tears, all the frustrations, pains, disappointment and all what you can think of.
I would like to give all the glory to Almighty God. He made this POSSIBLE!
My mother, my sweet mother, your daughter has brought home the trophy! Thank you for all your relentless prayers and all your support Mum ❤️.Your prayers were all I needed. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
My siblings @Charity Eze, Onyinye Jennifer, Chinenye Zim Ayaogu, Joy ubah, Sonia Chudex Valentine, Amaka Blessing, Daniella Ifeanyi, thank you so much for all your support and for always standing by me.
To my sweet Aunty Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Igwe and her lovely family, I can’t thank you enough. You don’t know how much looking up to you as a role model helped me achieve this height.
Really don’t know where to start to share my story. I will try to write this as informal as I can because the story would be distorted if written in formal.
As the 5th child in a family of 12 (though 2 are resting with the Lord) and whose parents are not a graduate, my father swore that even though he didn’t have the opportunity to become a graduate, all his children will be educated. A dream the cold hands of death wouldn’t allow him to witness. He died in 2010 leaving behind a widow with 10 kids to carter for.
I held on to his words and though life wasn’t so easy, I struggled to write my first JAMB and got admitted into Federal Polytechnic Oko where I acquired my National Diploma in Accountancy with 3.48/4.0 CGPA .
As a result of my excellent performances in class, one of my lecturers who double as my personal mentor and coach (Sirtony Anthony) adviced me to take up another JAMB UTME form as well as Direct Entry form and apply for admission into the University. In his words ” Dear, you have a first class brain and I would not want you to finish as a HND graduate”.
In 2016, I took his advice and applied for Direct entry with my diploma to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike and also took a fresh JAMB applying as fresher to University of Calabar.
I got admitted into the prestigious university of Calabar “Merit List” to study Accounting. I became a “Malabite😎” and told myself that I would graduate with a first class degree by the end of my studies in 2020. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
The struggle was real as I was face with all the devils you can think of bedeviling our academic system. During my cause of study, the same mentor, my personal mentor and academic backbone (Anthony Obiekwe ) advised and sponsored me to start my professional exams towards becoming a Chartered accountant.
I wrote and pass all the papers of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) exams and qualified as a Chartered accountant in my 300 level. It was then that I knew that God’s plan is a big one!
ASUU strike !!!
The goal was to graduate in 2020 but all thanks to ASUU, the extenders of number of years Nigerian students spend in school. A course of 4yrs lasted for 6yrs.
At a time, my village people started rejoicing that they may have succeeded in making me a drop out. To them, I am no longer a student since I have been schooling for for the past 8yrs( National diploma 2yrs, Bsc 4yrs and ASUU strike 2yrs). I was literally schooling forever 🤣.
As a young unmarried lady, you can imagine the pressure coming from relatives and my well wishers about marriage. “Harmony go and marry! What is wrong with you? Your time dey pass oh! I get husband for you. Etc.
Chei! None of them gave me a listening ear at all because to them, I was making a big mistake prioritizing my education to marriage. Well, I know they meant no harm and only wanted what they think is best for me🙂.
I would love to specially thank lots of individuals that contributed in so many ways to make this possible. Dr. John Ikponwosa Otalor, Dr. Sunday A. Effiong fca, Dr. Obal Usang fca, Prof. P. K. Bessong, Prof. Bassey E. Bassey, Mr. Godspower Ogar, Zangeta Imong, Akpan Moses, Justine Peter Akpan, Inyang Amos, Christain Chetachi Obinwa, Prince John Edu and lots more that I cannot mention for their eminent contributions to my achieving this success.
Today, I am a graduate, not just a graduate, a First class graduate, a Chartered accountant and also a Financial Modeling and valuation analyst (FMVA). To all the single ladies like me pursuing their dreams, this is just a reminder to never, ever , ever give up! Have faith in yourself and no one can stop you from achieving your dream✨
To all my connections, am now open for internships position. I have gathered all the theories I need and is now ready to bend down and learn the practicals🤭. Who would teach me?🙏
Am hoping to serve in Lagos and would really need all the recommendation I could get.
